PLA — the most popular 3D printing material: precise, easy, made from renewable feedstock (corn starch). When to choose it and when not — from practice.
3D printing with PLA — quality and eco-friendliness
Upload a file for a pricePLA (polylactic acid) is the filament behind 90% of decorative and gift 3D items worldwide. It is made from corn starch and sugar cane — renewable feedstock, not oil. It prints easily, with an excellent surface and precision, and no odour.
When PLA is the right choice: decorative figurines, form-and-scale prototypes, gifts, organizers, souvenirs, models with fine details.
Limitations: softens above ~55–60 °C (not for engine bays), is more brittle than PETG and dislikes prolonged UV and moisture. For outdoor and load-bearing parts, prefer PETG or ABS/ASA.
How strong is PLA?
For decor and light loads — entirely sufficient. For structural parts with spring action or constant weight we recommend PETG.
Is PLA bad for the environment?
Its base is a plant-based biodegradable material; however it does not break down in household conditions — it is recycled at specialised points, and the product itself lasts long.
Are there PLA variants with improved properties?
Yes — PLA+ (tougher) and matte/silk PLA for a different look. We note the variant on your order.
